Sometimes answers are simple

I was learning about the daily routine of a commercial officer when I overheard a colleague having trouble with a query after getting a new laptop. He asked a team member for help, who was about to start praying. Sensing an opportunity to help, I asked the colleague to continue praying while I sat down with him. I assisted him in switching accounts and logging into UI of Buraq (Bazaar’s data platform), which helped break the ice.

He asked me about my role at Bazzar, and I was momentarily speechless. I explained that one of my responsibilities is to maintain Buraq and ensure it runs smoothly. He mistakenly thought I dealt with food staples like flour, pulses, rice, and sugar.

He quickly got to the point, explaining that he had to run a query three times and dump its data to update an Excel sheet. He wanted to do it in one go, so I suggested using a union query. Once he was satisfied with the results, he asked me to skip a few items that were coming up. So, I filtered those records.

After that, he said, “Yar, ap na meri zindgi asaan kar di” (meaning “You made my life easier”). Although it may have been an exaggerated statement, it made me realize that my few minutes of help could save many hours of our organization. I had earlier decided to visit office three days a week in order to assist users with their queries and issues related to my domain. It was a small gesture, but it helped build a positive relationship with the user and made him more comfortable in approaching me for any future assistance. This incident highlighted the importance of being proactive and taking initiative to help others in the workplace.

Thus, learning that a union of different squads can filter out waste hours and increase efficiency.
